About WoodPlan
Woodplan was originally developed as a research project at the university of New Brunswick, Canada. The first program was sold in Scotland for use on a private estate in Deeside in 1985.

During the latter 1980s and early 90s the emphasis was on systems for the measurement of standing timber using digital data collection devices such as Callipers. This in turn led to the production of the first expert system for woodland compartment records and production forecasting. The harvesting control software Felled Timber was also produced at this time and became particularly popular with sawmills in Ireland. These were all DOS based modular programs but well ahead of their time in terms of functionality.

Throughout the 1990’s WoodPlan continued to grow as both a consultancy and software business, continuing to develop and refine forestry management software and production forecasting. In the late 1990’s the first Windows based software was released with increased interest from the public sector for the new Amenity Trees program originally designed for some of the largest private estates. WoodPlan released the original Windows version of Amenity Trees in late 1998 with North Tyneside Council being the first Local Authority user.

A management buyout in 2001 has seen the company grow further with new staff bringing in key expertise in areas such as cartography and IT systems integration.

2007 saw the release of WoodPlan Amenity Tree Care version 4 and the development of a business relationship with the Korec Group to provide more focused survey solutions in keeping with the advancements in survey technologies.

Despite significant changes over the last 23 years, WoodPlan still work with clients from the early days of the business, several of our existing customers were the first to trial our Microsoft DOS platform software as far back as 1986. Long before the term – ‘user friendly’ was used in computing and all was done from a command line! Today the on-going development of WoodPlan continues with all software packages tested to run on the latest Microsoft Windows Vista platform, Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008. WoodPlan is now expert in the area of GIS integration with all commonly used systems, interface with hand held data capture devices and has developed it’s own system for integrated map reporting.
